Craigflower Preparatory School was based at Craigflower House in Torryburn, from 1923 until its closure in 1979. Craigflower House is a protected ("listed") building. Torry Bay is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
THE CRAIGFLOWER SCHOOLHOUSE – A History up to 1958. Situated just three miles from Victoria’s City Hall, on the banks of the Gorge waters, stands a white building, a reminder of the first pioneers of the district. This building is the original Craigflower schoolhouse, the oldest school still standing in Western Canada.
The Craigflower Farmhouse and School are two important pieces of Victoria’s history, marking some of the earliest buildings of the pioneering era of British Columbia. Built in 1856 and 1855 respectively, the farmhouse and school were part of an early Hundson’s Bay Company farm and settlement community.
The Craigflower Schoolhouse was designated a national historic site of Canada in 1964 because: preserved virtually intact, it is the oldest surviving school building in Western Canada. The Craigflower Schoolhouse was constructed with lumber obtained from a steam-powered sawmill at the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Craigflower Farm.
