The university was established on January 17 (31), 1916 as Nizhny Novgorod People's University. From 1932 to 1990 it had the name of Gorky State University. In 2009, it was granted the status of a National Research University.
M.T. Grekhova. The first dean of the first radiophysical faculty in the USSR was M.T. Grekhova – Honored Science and Engineering Worker, honorary citizen of Nizhny Novgorod. In 1956 M.T.Grekhova was the initiator of creating the Riophysical Research Institute (RRI), whose Director she was until 1972.
