Our History. F ounded in 1539, The Crypt School is one of the oldest schools in the country. Now on its fourth site at Podsmead, the School’s work and ethos is still informed by the vision of its founders, John and Joan Cooke: to provide a free, grammar school education to bright children, regardless of their background.
The Crypt School is a grammar school with academy status for boys and girls located in the city of Gloucester. Founded in the 16th century, it was originally an all-boys school, but it made its sixth form co-educational in the 1980s and moved to a mixed intake from year 7 in 2018, thereby becoming the only fully coeducational selective school in Gloucester.

The Crypt School in Gloucester is now 482 years old. The school began its life in a tiny building adjacent to St Mary de Crypt church in Gloucester. Today the modern thriving school although on a different site is still sited on land provided through the bequests of John and Joan Cooke.

1849–1903. Born in Gloucester, England, poet, editor, and critic William Ernest Henley was educated at Crypt Grammar School, where he studied with the poet T.E. Brown, and the University of St. Andrews. His father was a struggling bookseller who died when Henley was a teenager.
