John Edward Thaw, CBE (3 January 1942 – 21 February 2002) was an English actor in television, stage and cinema, best known for his starring role in the television series Inspector Morse as Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse and The Sweeney as Detective Inspector Jack Regan.
John Thaw (1942-2002) was a British actor known for his roles in The Sweeney, Inspector Morse, Chaplin and other TV and film projects. He won three BAFTA Awards and was married to actress Sheila Hancock.

John Thaw was forty-four when filming started in 1986 for the first episode of Inspector Morse, although it is often noted that he looked older. He was perfectly cast as the grumpy-yet-vulnerable Detective Chief Inspector Morse, making the character completely his own.
