Henry Stanley, 4th Earl of Derby KG (September 1531 – 25 September 1593) was a prominent English nobleman, diplomat, and politician. He was an ambassador and Privy Counsellor, and participated in the trials of Mary, Queen of Scots and the Earl of Arundel .

When Henry Stanley was born in September 1531, in Lathom House, Lancashire, England, his father, Edward Stanley 3rd Earl of Derby, was 22 and his mother, Dorothy Howard Countess of Derby, was 20. He married Countess Margaret Clifford Stanley on 7 February 1555, in Westminster, Middlesex, England.
Sir Henry Stanley, son of Sir James Stanley of Cross Hall, the younger brother of the 2nd Earl, acquired Bickerstaffe through marriage in 1563. His son Edward was created a baronet in 1627....

This restrained but beautifully painted portrait was executed towards the end of Derby's life and reveals a sober, reflective countenance.
