University of California, Berkeley. Isaias William Hellman [a] (March 30, 1871 – May 10, 1920) [1] was an American banker who served as president of the Union Trust Company and, briefly, of Wells Fargo Bank shortly before his death.
Isaias W. Hellman was a more conservative banker, keeping a strong reserve and lending money only to people whom he thought knew their business and had the skills to succeed. Hellman lent the money that allowed Harrison G. Otis to purchase the Los Angeles Times and Edward Doheny to drill successfully for oil around Southern and Central California.
Mr. Isaias W. Hellman was a man of sterling excellence such as one seldom meets; a man of remarkably strong self-control coupled with steadfastness of purpose, and an ambition to acquire knowledge on all matters of vital ‘interest.
