Louis Nicolas Davout. Louis Nicolas Davout ( Annoux, 10 de mayo de 1770- París, 1 de junio de 1823), militar francés, duque de Auerstädt y príncipe de Eckmühl, fue uno de los más eficientes lugartenientes de Napoleón, popularmente conocido por su severidad y rudeza.

He was chef de bataillon in a volunteer corps in the campaign of 1792, and distinguished himself at the Battle of Neerwinden the following spring.

Born into the noble family of d’Avout, he was educated at the École Royale Militaire in Paris and entered Louis XVI ’s service as a second lieutenant in 1788.

Considered to be one of the best of Napoleon's marshals, Louis-Nicolas Davout was born in a rented farmhouse into a noble but very poor family. His father died in a hunting accident when he was eight. After attending the military schools of Auxerre and Paris, Davout became a sous-lieutenant in the cavalry regiment of Royal-Champagne.

Louis-Nicolas d'Avoust (also spelled Davout) was born on May 10, 1770 in Annoux, into one of the most illustrious families in Burgundy. As such, he entered the Ecole militaire de Paris (Military College of Paris) in 1785 as a gentleman-cadet.
