William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne PC, PC (Ire), FRS (15 March 1779 – 24 November 1848) was a British Whig politician who served as the Home Secretary and twice as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Some sources indicate that his full name was Henry William Lamb. [1] [2]
William Lamb was born into an aristocratic Whig family in London in 1779, son of Penistone and Elizabeth Lamb. His paternity was always questioned, and it is possible that he was the son of Lord Egremont. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He then studied the law at Lincoln’s Inn and was called to the bar in 1804.
