Vanier was the first French Canadian to serve as governor general. As a diplomat, he and his wife helped many Europeans displaced by the Second World War.
Georges Vanier received several honours while he served as Governor General -- he was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1942 and appointed by the Queen to the Imperial Privy Council of the United Kingdom in 1963.

Georges Vanier opened Canadian eyes to the plight of refugees during and after the Second World War. As Ambassador to France, Vanier urged the Canadian government to open its doors to European refugees fleeing the Nazi regime.
