John Frederick Hartranft (December 16, 1830 – October 17, 1889) was an American military officer who read the death warrant to the individuals who were executed on July 7, 1865, for conspiring to assassinate American President Abraham Lincoln.

John Hartranft led the 51st Pennsylvania in the assault across Antietam Creek. Pushing forward after a troubled night’s sleep, the regiment looked in wonder at the number of dead draft animals that lined the road. The Confederates were in retreat and IX Corps marched westward in pursuit.
The little known Pennsylvania Union Civil War General John Frederick Hartranft was born in 1830. After graduating college with a degree in Civil Engineering, he married Sallie Sebring in 1854. Hartranft began studying law and was admitted to the bar.
