Christian Archibald Herter Jr. (January 29, 1919 – September 16, 2007) was an American politician, diplomat, academic, and vice president of Mobile Oil Corporation. He was also the first chairman of the New York Urban Coalition.
As Under Secretary of State and Secretary of State, Herter helped oversee U.S. diplomacy during the 1958 invasion of Lebanon, the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis, and the U-2 incident in 1960. Herter’s role in the international arena did not end with the Eisenhower administration.
Christian Herter. Born in Paris, France, and educated at Harvard, Herter was part of the U.S. delegation to the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, where he helped draft the Covenant of the League of Nations. Later, he served as assistant to Herbert Hoover during the period that Hoover was instrumental in providing starvation relief to postwar Europe.
