Gerry ran for the U.S. Senate in 1916. In a major upset, he defeated incumbent Republican Senator Henry F. Lippett, thus becoming the first Democratic senator from Rhode Island since 1859. Gerry was also the first U.S. Senator from Rhode Island elected by popular vote rather than by the state senate.
