Lord Ronald Charles Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (2 August 1845 – 9 March 1916), was a British sculptor, best known for his statue of Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon. He also wrote biographies of Marie Antoinette and Joan of Arc, as well as serving as Liberal Member of Parliament for Sutherland.
19 de feb. de 2020 · Born into ‘the inner circle of English aristocratic life’, Lord Ronald Gower (1845-1916) is best known as the likely inspiration for the hedonistic aristocrat, Lord Henry Wotton, in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), and as the sculptor of the Shakespeare Memorial in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Lord Ronald Gower was well known in the homosexual community at the time, and was publicly implicated in the Cleveland Street Scandal. Gower was a close friend of Wilde's and is portrayed in The Picture Dorian Gray through the character of Lord Henry Wotton.
