Charles Cornwallis, 1. er marqués de Cornwallis, KG (Grosvenor Square, Londres, 31 de diciembre de 1738 - Gauspur, Ghazipur, India, 5 de octubre de 1805) fue un militar y gobernador colonial inglés.
Charles Cornwallis was sympathetic to American views during pre-war political disputes in Parliament but became one of the most prominent British generals during the War for Independence. He is known for his surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781 after allowing his army to become trapped there.

Cornwallis began his military career in earnest during the Seven Years’ War, transferring to the 12th Regiment of Foot and serving in Germany for three years. After his father passed away in 1762, he replaced him as Earl and took his seat in the House of Lords.
Cornwallis was the most aristocratic of the British commanders in America. Born in Grosvenor Square in London, he was the sixth child and oldest son of Charles, first earl Cornwallis, and Elizabeth Townshend. In his early twenties, he succeeded to the title and became a member of the House of Lords.
Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess and 2nd Earl Cornwallis (1738-1805), served as a general in the British Army during the American War for Independence. Cornwallis held commands in the colonies throughout the duration of the war and was frequently George Washington’s battlefield counterpart.
