  3. Richard Bellingham was born in Boston, England in 1592. He was a lawyer and a member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony charter company. He emigrated to Boston in 1634 and in 1635 was made deputy-governor. In 1641, he was elected governor, in opposition to Winthrop, by a majority of only six votes.

  5. Richard Bellingham was a famous and wealthy lawyer of his time who served as the 8th, 16th, and 18th Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (1641–1642; 1654–1655; 1665–1672). Author Nathaniel Hawthorne immortalized him as a character in his novel "The Scarlet Letter", as the brother of Ann Hibbins.
