When William Sinclair 1st Earl of Caithness was born in 1408, in Caithness, Scotland, his father, Henry Sinclair II, was 35 and his mother, Egidia Jill Douglas, was 21. He married Lady Elizabeth Douglas on 12 August 1432. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He registered for military service in 1436.

His maternal grandparents were Sir William Douglas of Nithsdale, and Robert II's daughter, Princess Egidia.
