Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle KG (1460?–1523) was an English soldier who became a peer and Knight of the Garter. He is known for his deeds at the Battle of Flodden . Life. Born about 1460, he was fifth son of Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby, by his first wife Eleanor, daughter of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury.

The Lord Monteagle who received the historic letter hinting at the Gunpowder Plot was the great-grandson of this first Lord, the hero of Flodden. The Monteagle barony of the Stanleys has long been extinguished, but the "last words of Marmion" form a memorial of Sir Edward Stanley prouder or more enduring than any peerage.

The first creation, in the Peerage of England, was in 1514 when Edward Stanley was summoned to the House of Lords as Lord Monteagle. He was the fifth son of Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby. The family seat was Hornby Castle, Lancashire. The barony fell into abeyance on the death of the seventh Baron in 1697.
