Count Engelbrecht I of Nassau-Siegen was the third son of count Johann I of Nassau-Siegen and Margaretha van der Mark, whose mother came from the county of Kleve, on the Dutch-German border.

She was a member of the House of Solms, a ruling family with Imperial immediacy, and spent her childhood at the parental Braunfels castle.
