Catherine, Lady Walpole. Dahl's half-length painting of Sir Robert's wife Catherine shows the sitter as a young woman and hangs today at Houghton Hall today. In actuality, Lady Walpole did not feel comfortable at Houghton and preferred her house on Dover Street, London.
15 de may. de 2024 · Catherine, Lady Walpole, wife of Sir Robert Walpole, Viscount Walpole and Baron Houghton, has a white marble memorial in the south aisle of Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey. The square plinth is by sculptor J.M. Rysbrack surmounted by a copy of a Roman statue of Modesty by F. della Valle.
Lady Walpole's lover at that time was reported to be Lord Hervey. Catherine and Robert Walpole had six children. Robert Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford (1701-31 March 1751), who married Margaret Rolle (17 January 1709 – 13 January 1781), later the 15th Baroness Clinton, on 26 March 1724 and had one son.
To the memory of Catherine Lady Walpole, eldest daughter of John Shorter, Esqr. of Bybrook in Kent and first wife of Sir Robert Walpole, afterwards Earl of Orford, Horace her youngest son consecrates this monument. She had beauty and wit without vice or vanity, and cultivated the Arts without affectation.

Before leaving office, Walpole arranged to have his illegitimate daughter legitimised, and she became ‘Lady Maria Walpole’. Walpole was able to accumulate an enormous fortune as both minister and Prime Minister.
