Leopold Philippe was the son of Duke Philippe Charles d'Arenberg, who fell in the Battle of Slankamen against the Turks on 19 August 1691, when Leopold Philippe was just one year old.

Leopold-Philippe (1690-1754), fourth sovereign duke of Arenberg and 10th duke of Aarschot. Married Marie-Françoise Pignatelli, princess of Bisaccia and countess d'Egmont. Last surviving member of the d'Arenberg family after the death of his cousin Octave, killed in the battle of Neerwinden in 1693.
He was a general officer in the Austrian army of the late 17th Century, and died of wounds in August 1691 after fighting at the Battle of Slankamen (Stari Slankamen, Serbia). He had married the daughter of an Italian marquis, and their eldest son, Léopold-Philippe, became the next Duke of Arenberg.
