Sancerre was born as the second son of count Louis II de Sancerre and Béatrix de Roucy. His father was killed at the battle of Crécy in 1346.

He was secondly married to Isabelle de Mayenne (widow of Dreux de Mello, daughter of Juhel de Mayenne and Gervaise de Vitré) before 1251.

Following his fathers death Louis was educated alongside the children of the Duke of Normandy. His first military experience was at the Siege of Melun in 1359. Following this he began to rise in prominence.
