Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll (June 1723 – 24 May 1806), styled Marquess of Lorne from 1761 to 1770, was a Scottish soldier and nobleman.
He was styled Marquess of Lorne from 15 Apr 1761, when his father succeeded as the 4th Duke of Argyll, till he succeeded as 5th Duke of Argyll on 9 Nov 1770. He is believed to be the first to use the courtesy title "Marquess of Lorne" as heir apparent of the Duke of Argyll. Born: Jun 1723.
John Campbell served as a Field Marshall in the Royal Army, and represented Glascow in Parliament from 1744-61, and Dover from 1765-66. On 22 December 1766, he was named Baron Sundridge, of Coomb Bank, Kent (with the remainder to his two brothers). He succeeded his father as Duke in 1770.

The Scots Guards. Field-Marshal John Campbell 5th Duke of Argyll. John was born in 1723, son of the 4th Duke. He joined the army and fought his first battle at Dettingen in 1743. In 1745 he was Lieutenant-Colonel in the 54th Foot, and then the 43rd with whom he went to Flanders.
