August Gottlieb Spangenberg (15 July 1704 – 18 September 1792) was a German theologian and minister, and a bishop of the Moravian Church. As successor of Count Nicolaus Zinzendorf, he helped develop international missions and stabilized the theology and organization of the German Moravian Church.

Spangenberg, August Gottlieb (1704-1792) Moravian bishop, theologian, and administrator. Spangenberg was born in Clettenberg, Germany, and entered the University of Jena in 1722. When he received his M. A. in 1729, he was already acquainted with the Moravians.
Augustus Gottlieb Spangenberg (1704-1792) was born in Klettenberg-Hohenstein, Saxony, and became a bishop and leader in the Unitas Fratrum (i.e. Unity of Brethren), also known now as the Moravian Church, an international expression of Christianity.
The collection consists of the papers of Moravian settler August Gottlieb Spangenberg, including diary, correspondence, and sermon notes, 1752-1760.

Two-hundred-fifty years ago August Gottlieb Spangenberg left America where he had served for many years. After Zinzendorf’s death in 1760 Spangenberg’s leadership was needed for the worldwide church. He left Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on June 22, 1762 and arrived in Herrnhut on November 12.
