Gotthard Kettler, Duke of Courland (also Godert, Ketteler, German: Gotthard Kettler, Herzog von Kurland; 2 February 1517 – 17 May 1587) was the last Master of the Livonian Order and the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia.

Gotthard Kettler, último maestre de la Orden de Livonia, fue el primer duque de Curlandia. Otros miembros de la Orden se convirtieron en nobles del territorio, y los feudos que anteriormente poseían pasaron a ser sus tierras. 2 de jul. de 2018 · Duke Gotthard Kettler (1517-1587) Gotthard Kettler was born in Westphalia; at the age of twenty he joined the Order of Livonia and in 1559 was elected Master of the Order. After its dissolution he became the vassal of the king of Poland-Lithuania and the governor of the newly established Duchy of Courland-Semigallia.
Gotthard Kettler, elected as the new Grand Master of the Order, petitioned Poland-Lithuania for help, but King Sigismund was reluctant to intercede for fear of inciting a conflict with Sweden or Denmark.
