    Alan was the oldest son of Roland of Galloway and Elena, or Helen, de Morville.

    Early References to English Interests

    Alan held lands in both England and Scotland. The earliest reference to him is in 1194/5, when he is recorded in the accounts of the Sheriff of Oxford as owing 15 Marks for the benevolence of Richard I of England over some unstated issue.In the next two years there are records of his holding hands at Teinford, Northamptonshire.

    Scottish Interests

    Alan was Constable of Scotland, a hereditary office. He held extensive lands in Scotland, with loose overlordship by the Scottish king. From 1199 he witnessed Scottish royal charters. Between 1201 and 1202 he led a campaign on behalf of the Scottish king, William the Lion, against Harald Maddadson, Earl of Caithness and Orkney.

    Previously-shown marriage to Helen, daughter of Reginald of the Isles

    Alan has previously been shown on WikiTree as married to Helen, daughter of Reginald of the Isles. There is no good evidence for this relationship. The one and only source so far found is The Scots Peerage compiled by James Balfour Paul in the early 1900s. This says that Alan had three wives, the second and third being Margaret, daughter of David Earl of Huntingdon, and a daughter of Hugh de Lacy. It says that the name of Alan's first wife is unknown but she was "said to be a daughter of Regi...
