The borders of the new empire were restricted to a narrow strip of land along the southeast coast of the Black Sea and was isolated from Constantinople.

One lucky break less, like Guiscard dropping dead of an illness, and we very well might luck at Alexios Komnenos as the last one of a number of increasingly pathetic ursurpers.

The son of the general Manuel Erotikos Komnenos, he was orphaned at an early age, and was raised under the care of Emperor Basil II.
