Margaret Holles, Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (née Cavendish; 22 October 1661 – 24 December 1715/16, London) was an English noblewoman. Margaret was born the third daughter and fourth of six children of Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and his wife, Frances Pierrepoint.
The Cavendish inheritance descended in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through the female line, passing first from Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne (1630-1691) to his daughter, Margaret (1661-1716) who married John Holles, 4th Earl of Clare (1662-1711).

In 1694 it was recreated, this time for John Holles, 4th Earl of Clare, who had married his cousin, Margaret, the 2nd Duke's daughter. Unfortunately, however, on John's death the title died out once again. A further recreation in 1715 meant that John's nephew, Thomas Pelham-Holles became the 4th Duke of
Cavendish [née Lucas], Margaret, duchess of Newcastle upon Tyne (1623? –1673), writer, was born at St John's Abbey, near Colchester, Essex, the youngest child of Thomas Lucas (c.1573–1625) and Elizabeth (d. 1647), daughter of John Leighton, of London.
John Holles, 4th Earl of Clare (1662-1711), married his cousin Margaret Cavendish (1661-1716), daughter of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne, through whom much of the Cavendish inheritance descended. The 2nd Duke died without male heirs and in 1691 Holles became the 3rd Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne.
