Endre Szemerédi nació el 21 de agosto de 1940 en Budapest, Hungría. Es investigador adjunto permanente del Instituto de Matemáticas Aplicadas Rényi Alfréd, Academia Húngara de Ciencias, Budapest. Desde 1986 ocupa asimismo la Cátedra de Ciencias de la Computación en la Universidad de Rutgers, Universidad Estatal de Nueva Jersey, EE.UU.
