William Russell (born 23 August 1946) is an English dramatist, lyricist and composer. His best known works are Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine, Blood Brothers and Our Day Out . Early life. Russell was born in Whiston, Lancashire (which is now Merseyside ).

About Willy Russell. Willy Russell’s career spans more than five decades; born in Liverpool in 1947, he left school at 15, became a women’s hairdresser and a part-time singer/songwriter performing on the local folk scene, before returning to education and becoming a teacher.
