Hiffernan is the subject of this portrait. Joanna Hiffernan (1843 – 1886) or Joanna Heffernan was an Irish artists' model and muse who was romantically linked with American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler and French painter Gustave Courbet.
Unraveling the mystery of Joanna Hiffernan’s identity depends upon two types of evidence: biographical facts and works of art. Only a handful of her letters and no photographs survive. Baptized in Ireland in 1839, she migrated with her family to London by June 1843. She met Whistler in 1860 and within a year became the artist’s chief model.
