John Singer Sargent was one of the leading portraits painters of his generation, creating images of Edwardian Era high society. A prolific artist, he produced around 900 oil paintings, over 2,000 watercolors and even more sketches and preliminary studies.

Pintor estadounidense. Nacido en el seno de una adinerada familia americana que vivía en Europa desde 1854, Sargent, tras asistir unos meses en 1873 a las clases de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Florencia, se formó en París con Carolus Duran, a cuyo taller asistió entre 1874 y 1879.
The family of John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) had deep roots in New England. His grandfather, Winthrop Sargent IV, descended from one of the oldest colonial families, had failed in the merchant-shipping business in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and had moved his family to Philadelphia.
Born in 1856 in Florence to expatriate American parents, John Singer Sargent received his first formal art instruction at Rome in 1868, and then sporadically attended the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence between 1870 and 1873.
