Oliver Hilary Sambourne Messel (13 January 1904 – 13 July 1978) was an English artist and one of the foremost stage designers of the 20th century.
Born to a wealthy, well-connected family, Oliver Messel studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and his first exhibited works were masks, which were admired by Diaghilev and led to a commission to design masks for the Ballet Russes production Zéphire et Flore in 1925.

He was born on 13 January 1904 to Maud Frances (1875-1960) (daughter of the Punch cartoonist Edward Linley Sambourne (1844-1953)) and Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard Charles Rudolph Messel (1872-1953), a successful banker.
