Anne Damer was celebrated as Britain’s first woman sculptor who portrayed both animals and people with memorable personal style. Noble-born and highly educated, Damer inscribed the Shock Dog with her name in Greek to recall her art’s classical origins.
Anne Seymour Damer. Born the only daughter of Henry Seymour Conway (later Field-Marshall) and Lady Caroline Campbell daughter of the 4th Duke of Argyll, Anne Conway spent much of her childhood at Park Place, Remenham near Henley-on-Thames.
