Witi Tame Ihimaera-Smiler DCNZM QSM (/ ˈ w ɪ t i ɪ h i ˈ m aɪ r ə /; born 7 February 1944) is a New Zealand author. Raised in the small town of Waituhi , he decided to become a writer as a teenager after being convinced that Māori people were ignored or mischaracterised in literature.

Ihimaera, Witi (Witi Tame Ihimaera-Smiler) (1944 – ), novelist, short story writer, anthologist and librettist, was born in Gisborne. He has the distinction of being the first Māori writer to publish both a book of short stories and a novel.
Witi Ihimaera is a novelist and short story writer from New Zealand, perhaps the best-known Māori writer today. He is internationally famous for The Whale Rider. Ihimaera lives in New Zealand and is of Māori descent and Anglo-Saxon descent through his father, Tom. He attended Church College of New Zealand in Temple View, Hamilton, New Zealand.
