Bernt Balchen, D.F.C., (23 de octubre de 1899-17 de octubre de 1973), fue un geógrafo polar noruego – estadounidense y pionero de la aviación.
Bernt Balchen (23 October 1899 – 17 October 1973) was a Norwegian pioneer polar aviator, navigator, aircraft mechanical engineer and military leader. A Norwegian native, he later became an American citizen and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Col. Bernt Balchen was America's greatest Arctic expert in modern times. Born in Norway in 1899, he served as a cavalryman in the Finnish Army against the Russians in World War I before becoming a pilot in the Norwegian Naval Air Force in 1921 where he acquired his initial Arctic flying experience.
Colonel Bernt Balchen, photographed in June 1945, was already known as an adventurer when he was selected to lead the effort to make clandestine flights in and out of neutral Sweden. The Carpetbaggers were excited to work with Bert Balchen, and travel to Sweden also intrigued them.
