Örbyhus is a locality situated in Tierp Municipality, Uppsala County, Sweden with 2,153 inhabitants in 2018. Örbyhus Castle, located a few kilometers from the village, is where king Eric XIV of Sweden was imprisoned until his death from arsenic poisoning on 26 February 1577. History
Örbyhus Castle is located in northern Uppland, 50 km north of Uppsala, in an area that has been the scene of Swedish history on several occasions. The castle was the focus of national history in 1577 when the deposed king Erik XIV, eldest son of Gustav Vasa, died here.
The most beautiful monument of Örbyhus Castle’s history is the tower, which dates back as far as the 1450’s. At this time Örbyhus was owned by Johan Kristersson Vase, grandfather of king Gustav Vasa. Johan Kristersson Vase had the tower built as a defence structure on the almost impassable marshland by lake Vendelsjön.
