He was a Catholic king of a Protestant country who was nonetheless popular with his subjects. He also was a capable soldier who fought well in the Seven Weeks’ War of 1866 and in the Franco-German War of 1870–71.

He studied at the University of Paris, and became the first rector of the University of Vienna.
