Alexis, tsar of Russia from 1645 to 1676. The son of Michael, the first Romanov monarch of Russia, Alexis encouraged trade with the West and professionalized the state bureaucracy. He expanded Russian control to the Dnieper and formalized the enserfment of the peasantry by tying them to the land.
