Alfred Sutro OBE (7 August 1863 – 11 September 1933) was an English dramatist, writer and translator. In addition to a succession of successful plays of his own in the first quarter of the 20th century, Sutro made the first English translations of works by the Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck .
Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro (April 29, 1830 – August 8, 1898) was a German-American engineer, politician and philanthropist who served as the 24th mayor of San Francisco from 1895 until 1897. Born a German Jew, he moved to Virginia City, Nevada and made a fortune at the Comstock Lode.
A Marriage Has Been Arranged (1904) is a one-act play by British author and dramatist Alfred Sutro. The play premiered at the Garrick Theatre, in London, on March 27, 1904, with Arthur Bourchier playing the role of Mr. Harrisson Crockstead and Violet Vanbrugh as Lady Aline de Vaux.
SUTRO, ALFRED (1863–1933), English playwright. The son of a German physician and grandson of a rabbi, Sutro was educated at the City of London School and in Brussels, and became a successful wholesale merchant. After his marriage – his wife was a sister of the first Marquess of *Reading – he devoted himself exclusively to writing.
Alfred Sutro, long a member of the California Historical Society, died on March 9, 1945. Mr. Sutro was born in Victoria, B.C., October 15, 1869. He moved to San Francisco with his family in 1875 and resided there until the time of his death.
