Designed by the architect Joseph Kornhäusel, and one of the most important creations of the Classicistic age in Austria, it was sadly destroyed in 1945. Karl did not marry until 1815, when he was already forty-four. His bride was Henriette von Nassau-Weilburg (1797–1829).
Franz Karl: The Archduke in the background. The unprepossessing and mentally somewhat underendowed Archduke Franz Karl was always overshadowed by his wife Sophie. The only reason he has not disappeared entirely into the shadows of history is that he was the father of Emperor Franz Joseph.
Shunted to the sidelines, he witnessed the annihilating defeat inflicted on Austria at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, in the wake of which Napoleon advanced to the gates of Vienna and was able to dictate the terms of the peace of Pressburg, which were disadvantageous to Austria.
