The Second Medieval Priory. Having found their initial site too constrained for an expanding community of friars, a new site was found to the south of the city walls and close to the river, and a new priory was built thanks to the generosity of benefactor Isabel Bolbec de Vere, Countess of Oxford.
Blackfriars, located in the southwest corner of central London, originated as a Dominican friary founded in the year 1278. The name Blackfriars comes from the color of the robes that the Dominicans wore. When the Dominicans arrived in England in 1221, they established their first London monastery outside of the city walls in Holborn.
