The only son of King Gustav VI Adolf’s eldest son, Prince Gustav Adolf (who died in an air crash in 1947), Carl Gustaf became crown prince in 1950, when his grandfather acceded to the throne.

Han är son till arvsprins Gustaf Adolf och prinsessan Sibylla. Han gifte sig 1976 med Silvia Sommerlath.
