Charles Urban (1867-1942) was one of the major figures of early cinema. Charles Urban, Motion Picture Pioneer. Chronology. 1867 Carl (later Charles) Urban is born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 15 April 1867, the second child and eldest son of Joseph Urban (34), a sign painter from Ronsberg, Austro-Hungary, and Anna Sophie (née Glatz) (33) from Koenigsberg, East Prussia.
