Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis, PC (7 March 1754 – 16 May 1839), known as the Lord Clive between 1774 and 1804, was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1794 when he was raised to the peerage as Baron Clive.

26 de oct. de 2023 · In 1784, Robert’s eldest son Edward Clive (1754–1839) married Henrietta Herbert, the daughter of the Earl of Powis. The marriage provided financial security for Powis, with the wealth and colonial power the Clive family had amassed in India, while bringing aristocratic prestige to the Clive name.
4 de nov. de 2023 · In 1578, Powis was leased to Sir Edward Herbert (c.1542–95), the second son of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Anne Parr (sister of Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII). As a second son Edward was not likely to inherit his family home so he had to make his own way in the world.
The 1st Baron Clive, a descendant of the Clive family of Styche (Shropshire), had made extensive purchases in Shropshire and elsewhere, including Montford, near Shrewsbury, in 1761, Walcot, near Bishops Castle, in 1763, and Oakly, from the Earl of Powis, in 1771.
