Gus Van Sant es un director, productor y guionista estadounidense, hijo de Gus Green Van Sant, ocupado en marketing de empresas textiles, y de Betty Seay. Comenzó a interesarse por el cine en su niñez, realizando películas caseras desde temprana edad. Con la intención de convertirse en pintor, Gus estudió en la Escuela de Diseño de Rhode Island.
