The President of the Hamburg Parliament is the highest official person of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The parliament is among other things responsible for the law, the election of the Erster Bürgermeister (First Mayor) for the election period and the control of the Senate .

The 2020 Hamburg state election was held on 23 February 2020 to elect the members of the 22nd Hamburg Parliament. The outgoing government was a coalition of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and The Greens led by First Mayor Peter Tschentscher . Despite losses, the SPD remained comfortably in first place with 39% of votes.
The Hamburg State Parliament (Bürgerschaft) is the legislature of Hamburg and consists of 121 deputies, currently presided over by Social Democrat Carola Veit. Responsibilities of the Bürgerschaft include law creation, amendment and ratification, as well as the election of the First Mayor of Hamburg.
