Im Rahmen der nordrhein-westfälischen Gebietsreform wurde der Kreis Minden durch das „Gesetz zur Neugliederung der Gemeinden und Kreise des Neugliederungsraumes Bielefeld (Bielefeld-Gesetz)“ am 1. Januar 1973 mit dem benachbarten Kreis Lübbecke zum Kreis Minden-Lübbecke vereinigt.
