A non-profit hospital, or not-for-profit hospital, is a hospital which is organized as a non-profit corporation. Based on their charitable purpose and most often affiliated with a religious denomination they are a traditional means of delivering medical care in the United States.

Variation by state, however, is significant, with Florida, Texas, and Nevada having the highest percentage of for-profit hospitals, at just over 50 percent.

In it, Young and colleagues found that on average hospitals spent 7.5% of their operating expenses on community benefit, with 0.4% allocated to community health improvement.
