Neukölln (German: [nɔʏˈkœln] ⓘ; formerly Rixdorf), until 1920 an independent city, is a large inner-city quarter (Ortsteil) of Berlin in the homonymous borough (Bezirk) of Neukölln, including the historic village of Alt-Rixdorf and numerous Gründerzeit apartment blocks.
Each borough is made up of several officially recognized subdistricts or neighborhoods ( Ortsteile in German, sometimes called quarters in English). The number of neighborhoods that form a borough varies considerably, ranging from two ( Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg) to fifteen ( Treptow-Köpenick ).
