Espira (del alemán: Speyer) ([ˈʃpaɪ̯ɐ] ⓘ) es una ciudad del estado federado alemán de Renania-Palatinado. Tiene aproximadamente 50 000 habitantes y se halla a orillas del río Rin , 25 km al sur de Mannheim y 25 km al norte de Karlsruhe .

It is one of the most important Romanesque monuments from the time of the Holy Roman Empire. The cathedral was the burial place of the German emperors for almost 300 years.
In 150, the town appears as Noviomagus on the world map of the Greek Ptolemaios. In 346, a bishop for the town is mentioned for the first time. In 1030, Emperor Conrad II starts the construction of Speyer Cathedral, today one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
